I have a '97 SE-T with 36.4K on the odometer. My DI cassette shows no signs of problems. My understanding is that these are fairly reliable, though I do occasionally see posts like yours with the classic signs of failure.
As for the plugs, believe it or not, the cheap-o NGKs that come as original equipment are the best choice. At the advice of TG, I switched to 6's (instead of the original 7's) because they run a bit hotter and are less likely to foul if you take a lot of short trips like I do. For some reason, these cars prefer the NGK copper-tipped plugs to anything fancy or expensive. At only about $8 for a new package of NGK plugs, it's a great yearly investment to swap them out!
Don't know what to tell you about the "check engine" light or how to reset it. There might be a way to reset your car's fault codes so the light doesn't come on by removing/re-inserting a fuse or disconnecting/reconnecting the battery. Assuming the computer really doesn't detect a problem, seems like it should reset by itself after a certain number of start-ups.
