Be sure to run the TCO calculations on various vehicle options for 3, 5 or 10 years of ownership. Fixing an older vehicle that has fully depreciated vs. buying something newer but still hasn't fully depreciated pretty much always is cheaper.
I think depreciation is the low hanging fruit on car ownership. I see lots of people saying "I got a great deal on this new car AND zero percent interest!" Yes, but after the first few years, you've thrown away perhaps tens of thousands just in depreciation.
You do play the lottery a little bit with fixing the car or buying another car. The fixes could cost more than you expect. Or the replacement car you bought springs undiscovered issues upon you.
Another area that gets lots of attention is gas mileage. Unless you drive A TON per year and unless the newer car gets double the gas mileage as the old, you're still not going to save much.
So run the numbers carefully I say.
But also, if you need or desire a different car because the Viggen isn't a perfect fit for you, then who cares about the numbers, just do what you have to do!
