Oil in the brake booster...just the booster? Posted by SPG Jr [Email] (#1830) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SPG Jr) on Mon, 9 Mar 2020 17:48:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2000 Viggen, manual trans, 150k
Not long after getting this car in 2016, I heard the intermittent high-pitched whistle sort of sound when braking that this board suggests was a brake booster going bad. I purchased a new, OE booster and related bits on sale, anticipating the repair.
This has now progressed to a hissing sound when applying the brakes and the brakes now seem soft enough that I'd be concerned about an emergency braking situation. Really noticed it when stuck in a traffic jam last week.
Planning to replace the booster this weekend, I was under the hood tonight, checking things out, and noticed wetness on the trans case and discovered the bottom of the booster is seeping oil and I guess dripping down (when applying the brakes? there was a pool in one of the little recesses on the case, and I just rinsed out the engine bay yesterday so this is fresh)
Question is, is the booster the only thing I should be troubleshooting? The manual trans doesn't have the vacuum pump, right? Hate to do the booster only to ruin that w/ oil b/c of a vacuum check valve or something.
TIA.
