Cross your fingers and hope it's just a linkage issue...
Beyond that of course the first thing that comes to mind is drain the transmission into a clean pan and see what's in the fluid. Lots of fine particles could mean that the transmission has been eating itself and it might be too far gone for a rebuild. Big chunks could be good since maybe just one part failed and jammed it up, so a rebuild could make sense.
Labor for the transmission remove/replace alone is going to be more than the car is worth I'd think and while the transmission is out you'll feel obligated to replace the clutch disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing, have the flywheel resurfaced and probably replace the rear main seal. Plus the cost of a used transmission or a full rebuild and you'll really have to be attached to this car.
