My 1997 900SE has had two problems over the years that caused it to die suddenly and smell like gas, which sounds like the issues you're having. The first was a bad evap purge valve. It failed open, which let uncontrolled gas fumes into the throttle body. That's happened twice, and now the valve's no longer available. Luckily I found one on another 900SE at Pick-n-Pull. The second issue, which caused almost the same problems, was a failed temperature sensor on the intake manifold. It sits in between two of the intake runners, and controls the fuel maps based on the engine temperature. If it fails the wrong way, the ECU will send too much fuel to the engine, which will choke it out.
I'd start by unplugging the hose that goes from the evap purge valve to the throttle body, and cap it off on the throttle body end. If that fixes your problem, then you know it's the purge valve. The temperature sensor is pretty cheap, but it's a PITA to replace since you have to loosen the fuel rail to get a socket on it.
