Jimmy, I agree that the next thing to try is replacing the clutch cable, but how is it possible that I initially had 3/16" slack at the clutch lever end and ended up with a little more than 3/4" of slack after fiddling with the adjustment nuts? No tension was applied to the cable during this endeavour other than my arm strength. I'm a 79 year old geezer who doesn't have the strength to stretch such a cable which only has 9636 miles on it. Whatever the explanation, the cable now behaves as if it is too long, so I'll replace it with an after market, self adjusting one from eEuroparts.
