The belt is a grooved belt and requires the tension of the tensioner (not idler - see below) pulley assembly to work. They are simple to remove and replace but only if you have the parts. A belt, the tension pulley and an idler pulley are the only spares I carry in my 1996S. The last time the shop replaced the belt either they or the prior owner's shop broke the cast in hole that a 1/2" extension bar goes in to take the tension off the belt. So I now keep a large jawed pipe wrench just in case. They say you have to remove the right front wheel and the flexible splash shield to get at the belt. If you have long arms and all you are doing is replacing the belt, you can take the tension off the pulley, remove the old belt and install the new belt from above. If you have to replace a pulley is another matter and you have to get right in there! The "Idler" pulley is placed so that the belt touches more of what it is designed to turn than if it ran straight from one unit (generator) to another (power steering pump).
