So I finally got chance to take a look at the check engine light problem. I cleaned the plugs and set the gaps. I checked the resistance of the O2 sensor to ground and got abut 3 ohms which is slightly more than just shorting the multi-meter leads. I unscrewed the O2 sensor and screwed it back in (how are you supposed to replace these things - the wires get all twisted up when you unscrew !). I checked the battery contacts but couldn't check the electrolyte levels since it's a maintenance free unit and it looked like removing the covers would break them. I checked hoses, air filter, coolant level. All were OK. I disconnected the battery for about 20 minutes, reconnected and started the car. No check engine light. After about 30 seconds, the check engine light came on. I also noticed that the cooling fan immediately spun up for about 5 seconds. This was a cold engine on a 63 degree day, so I'm not sure what that was all about. I took the car for a high speed run. It seems to run OK. I let it idle for a while to see if it would overhead. It didn't.
So my last hope is to somehow find the check engine code. I've read that the check engine light is supposed to flash, but it doesn't. I'm assuming that the check engine light is the dashboard light that says "CHECK ENGINE". There's no light on the engine management computer, right ?
Failing that I'll have to take it to the Saab dealer - at least they have Turbo Beetle loaner cars, so that's almost worth the "arm and leg" fee to pop the hood.
Any other suggestions ?
Nigel
