Difficult to shift into 5th or Reverse

I just got my car back from a mechanic for a minor coolant leak. While coming home I realized that shifting to 5th was very difficult. The stick has a lot more play on the right side and can now almost touch the passenger seat. It is hard to get the car into 5th, and even worse for reverse. It feels like there is something stopping me from getting into these gears. The mechanic said he drove my car around for about 20 miles to road test it, I have never been to this place before and before I jump to any conclusions about what happened I would like to know what the problem is.
