First off: Why does he need to drive the car to see if the coolant leak had gone away? He could have easily started the car, pulled it out of the garage and let it warm up, pulled in another car for an oil change, pull your car back in, and check for leaks. Why drive the car anywhere? Coolant leaks don't need to make themselves apparent at speed, it isn't a CV joint or a sticky brake caliper. It's a fluid leak.
And btw, for guys who are used to driving chevy corsicas every day, a fancy european car that even has a cd player heated seats and hot body lines can be fun to ram around a little, say, for maybe 20 miles. Call him, wait for him to say "go * yourself", tell him you'll see him in court, and just to be ahead of the game, I'd file with your better business bureau now. They can't do anything really, but it puts the guy's name on a list. Courts frequently find for the plaintiff in these cases too. Your argument will be that he had no reason to use the car for 20 miles or 20 feet. A car's cooling system will build pressure where it sits, even in Antartica.
When all is said and done, you will have spent enough money fixing this problem that you could've just bought a nice big set of tools and even air tools and compressor, and a fat shop manual. I don't even trust my local saab dealer for anything more than over the phone advice. Every wrench that touches my car is gripped by my own hand for this reason precisely. No one is born a mechanic, but lot's of people are born suckers. Pick your team.
