This sounds like a mis-alignment of the shift mechanism. I can't think of a logical reason that the shift mechanism was loosened or disconnected while looking for a coolant leak, but the symptoms described sure point in that direction.
The realignment procecure is quite simple and can be done from the top of the engine compartment with a 12 (or 13?) mm socket with a long extension. Search this board for past posts of the procedure.
