I changed my '90 900 over at 120k mi & never looked back. It had one or two slight leaks by that age, & the syn didn't make them any better or worse. I started out using Castrol Syntec, but then found out they were being made from less expensive Group III basestocks rather than the better & more expensive Group IV basestocks. Since the price was the same but the quality was higher, I started using Mobil 1.
For a non-turbo engine, you could use a Group III 5W-40 diesel-style oil like Shell's Rotella & get supreme protection & the cleaning you're looking for at a reasonable cost. (Saab's OE oils are diesel-style formulations.) This syn oil is gasoline engine safe & should be able to go at least 10k miles between changes in a non-turbo engine.
Another product to consider is Auto-Rx. A single application will clear out any deposits that have built up over the past 113k miles & give you the greatest benefit before you switch. (Just change filters on your current oil & add the A-Rx, then dump it after 1500 miles & refill with Rotella.)
