I thought the story stood on its own, away from the effects.
The effects, well, the hype was was not overhyped. The CGI is a new way to make movies. Two days later, and I'm still seeing those big blue faces.
The 3-D wasn't fuzzy for me (CW, are you sure you were wearing the glasses?). The experience of the the Na'vi in flight, I felt like I was at DisneyWorld.
IMAX just added to the experience. Yes, it wasn't shot with IMAX cameras, but hello, it typically wasn't shot with cameras. It was computer-generated.
So don't worry if you don't have local IMAX, just see it (in 3-D) before you movie theater relegates it to the smaller auditoriums.
