Hopefully a list will get you started:
1. Wash bucket - 5 gallon plastic bucket with handle, available at any hardware store. Use strictly for car washing. Cost about $5.00.
2. Wash mitts - Lots to choose from. My favorite is 100% cotton chenille mitts, but lambswool mitts are very popular and a boar's hair brush is a nice alternative. I suggest at least two, one for upper areas of the car and one for lower, dirtier areas. Cotton mitts are $5.00-8.00, lambswool and boar's hair more spendy.
3. Shampoo - Most of the brand name shampoos are fine. Mothers, Meguiars and Eagle One are all good store bought shampoos. With the boutique product lines, some of their shampoos are formulated to compliment their waxes and sealants. Cheap shampoos aren't worth it (too aggressive cleaning power, not slippery enough to allow wash mitts to glide across the paint, won't rinse clean or may leave spots/residue)
4. Drying Tools - Like Stufis said, microfiber is teh win! A couple waffleweave towels (best water absorbency) will do the trick. If you're gonna polish and wax your car more frequently, perhaps a "starter kit" of microfiber towels would be a good idea. Waynestowels.com has kits from $29.99. There are several good towel suppliers on the net.
I also use a Calif Water Blade to squeegee off most of the water before finishing with a microfiber. The combo works well for me but I know the blade scares some folks.
5. Additional Cleaning Tools and Chemicals - You might want a wheel cleaner and wheel cleaning brush, a stiffer brush for scrubbing tires, a bug sponge, or maybe something with a long handle if your back gives you trouble. Most auto parts stores will have a selection of tools and cleaners. Mothers FX Wheel Cleaner is a nice product, for example. Remember, soft bristles for paint and wheels, stiff bristles for tires only.
One more thing: Go to Sears or Home Depot and get one of those Fireman's Hoze Nozzles. It looks just like it sounds and cost about $20. One of the best car washing tools I've ever used. No more crappy plastic hoze nozzles!!!
I've gone down the same road so I know how you feel. Hit us with questions if ya got more. Happy shopping!!
