As with anything, its all depends on who's doing the work. Auto painting is as much art as science. As Chris74 mentioned, most of the results come from the tedious hours of prep work, not with a certain brand of paint or type of spray gun.
Many years ago I visited a well-known body shop in LA famous for painting Ferrari's. There was a new Testarossa there being finished up. It had been repainted in its OE color, black. Apparently the Ferrari's owner did not like the quality of the factory paint so he commissioned this shop to redo it. Cost? About $50,000.
If you go to a car show that has restored cars in it, you'll see paint jobs far better than the factory paint, eventhough they look identical to what the factory did. Done properly a repaint will simply blow away a factory paint job. All it takes is money, patience, and a great painter.
