the laptop lid opened a bit and with the whole thing sitting on risers, I would think that would suffice. Warm/hot air is convected away from the keyboard and lid opening and cooler air coming up from the bottom openings (I don't have a powerbook) but I would imagine it has some small openings either drive openings or just the seams around plug in ports etc.
Tilting would help as suggested by Noel as this creates a natural up draft than letting it sit flat.
Most heat is conducted away from the chip via heat sink to the laptop body itself. In other words, the whole computer chassis is the heat sink. This heat is then convected away by surrounding air, in this case mostly from the keyboard if the lid is opened, if not, then the heat is conducted to the top cover and the whole computer acts as a heat sink to air and will get hot and equilibrate with surrounding air. I would imagine it gets pretty hot using it this way with the lid closed.
I doubt the laptop has much bottom surface contact other than those little rubber feet to raised the bottom a few mm to let air into the bottom. I would imagine if you use your laptop on a soft surface, such as on a comforter so air isn't able to get to the bottom, it would get even hotter than it sitting on a hard surface.
