The crucial legal part here is that the car was 3K over warranty. And technically Saab don't have to cover the repair.
Morally and as a goodwill, you would think that they fess up to what they promised in earlier conversation.
First, the timing chain is pretty much installed "for life" in the car, it should not have to be changed.
I can only speculate as to why the chain was replaced 9 month ago, lack of oil changes and the chain wore out or that the chain was of bad quality from factory.
I also don't know if Saab offer 12 month warranty on repairs when the repair is done under factory warranty.
If the chain was replaced for lack of oil changes/services, than you wouldn't have service receipts to back up your claim with. But you say you have so that's not the issue.
Did the independant Saab shop dismantle any parts of the engine or did they only give an visual estimate?
It sounds strange that Saab would back out of the promise just because another shop would have looked at the car?
