There's a key difference between what's gone on for the past 10 years and what will go on in this current slow economic environment. Should the Saab brand continue to lose money and suffer such quality problems (as shown by latest JD Power initial quality ratings, which were very low), I can see GM management pulling the plug on the Saab brand.
Their most recent corporate actions display this. First, there was the large layoff at Saab. You don't do that if you're trying to build a brand. Second, this Saabaru. That's the type of action you implement to milk a brand in its final stages, not to build one to compete with the likes of BMW and Saab. Finally, shutting down all the engine technology development Saab was pursuing.
Reading between the lines of these recent corporate actions, I'd guess Saab has about 3-4 years left as a brand.
