I was very interested in a 9-5 Aero after a short test drive there. When I heard about the GM 24 hour test drive program, I thought it would be an ideal way to get more acquainted with the car. I called the salesperson with whom I had been dealing and she told me that that was not available on weekends. Since that restriction is not part of GM's published restrictions, I explained that doing it on a weekday would do me no good since the car would sit in my driveway all night and in the parking lot at work all day. I really wouldn't have any chance to experience the car. She then said that when I had a weekend available, she would talk to the sales manager about it.
I called back a few weeks later and asked again. She connected me to the sales manager who explained that that weekend, which happened to be Memorial day weekend, would not work since they were expecting a lot of traffic through the showroom but that any other weekend would be fine. I said that that was understandable and that I would call back for another weekend.
So, I called back today to set it up. Again, I was directed to the sales manager, who informed me that she had misspoken in our earlier conversation and that the dealership owners had a policy against weekend 24 hour test drives. She explained that they had fairly limited number of Aeros in inventory and didn't want to tie any up on a weekend. This is ridiculous! They have a very interested customer in their hands and they choose to turn him away on the hope that some "up" is going to walk in and shell out $40K this weekend?
Unfortunately, a dealer with this kind of customer service is not one with whom I wish to do business. There are Infiniti and Lexus dealers 200 yards away that know how to treat a customer. Saab makes a damn fine product. Too bad, this dealer is not matching that standard.
