A "European" beam pattern has a sharp cut-off and a broad, uniform spread of light in front of the car. DOT paterns throw a splash of light down the center to right in front of the car.
Many people don't appreciate the E-code halogens b/c the broad, even spread of light also means less intensity in the "hot" area. People associate that bright hot zone with "lots of light" even though glare (and snow, rain, and fog glare) is a problem, glare for oncoming cars is a problem, and the amount of light outside the "hot zone" is much lower.
With Saab's (Valeo on the 9-5, Hella on the 9-3 SS) bi-xenon, there is so much more total light that it combines the brightness of the DOT "Hot Spot" with the uniform beam spread and sharp cutoff of a European pattern. I used to routinely use the fog lights to illuminate construction barriers, especially in the winter when they get covered with dirt. With the bi=xenon, I don't need to- it throws huge amounts of light down to the side, huge amounts of light down the road, and spreads it all uniformly.
And to think I used to deal with tungsten sealed beams...6 volt, at that...
