You are right. GM bought SAAB, probably to get the upscale name and some technology (turbo and ignition systems maybe?). Throw in a few generations of management changes (like every two years or so) and then GM gets distracted by the fact that you can make nore money putting alloy wheels and leather seats in a pick up and make more money than investing in a product line with a low volume. Ten years later, its just the realization of human nature in a corporate environment. Short term profits for a 15 minute attention san market versus long term goals to build a brand. You're Harley/AMF comparison is right on and probably just a little too far back in time for most on this board to appreciate.
SAAB was at its best when it was truly independently in its style (distinctive look and feel), economically powerful (turbo fours) and practical (hatchback optional). Maybe the brand will recover after the "Revert to the Clones" era ( 3 series me too styling, SAABaru and SAABurban) has past in a few years. Keep the faith - and any C900 turbo that runs!
