But how about proactively designing for failure with an eye toward service revenue? For example, for the same price you can either use a part that will last 8 years or one that will last 4 (just about time for the warranty to expire).
Are these thoughts too sophisticated to execute within the complex relationship between Design/Purchasing/Sales.Marketing etc?
