Cannon are pretty good value from my research. I have a Nikon 4300 which is above the price range you listed, but I would look at Nikon for good optics and true color. I love mine. My bro has a cannon with 8x zoom. It would be nice to have more zoom (I have 3x), but I like my form factor a bit better and mine takes better pictures. Digital zoom is not what you use to compare. Optical is teh comparison point as well as megapixel. The other important point is what 'asa equivalent' can the camera operate at. Most are asa 100 only which means daylight or flash. As you go up, you can get asa 400 or 800 (mine is 400) and you can take low light indoors without a flash if that is important. To me, this is more important than zoom, but it depends on what you do with it.
