At US$200, you're asking alot if you want 8x10's. I'd hold out until you have at least another 100 or so. If you're going to use it at least once a week, figure it will pay for itself in savings from all that 35mm film you don't need. More megapixels mean you can crop pics, then enlarge them for printing without losing too much quality.
I own the Canon S230 (3mp) and newer S400 (4mp). In Nikon, I have a CP880 (3mp) and a CP5700 (8x optical zoom, 5mp).
90% of my pics are taken with the S400 (Daughter appropriated S230). I fly alot, and it's in constant use. Canon really owns the small, quality camera market with their digtal Elphs. They're rugged, fast, and take remarkable pics. The fit nicely in the door storage of Saabs. See reviews at http://www.dpreview.com. The forums there are great sources of info.
The video thing is a bit of a gimmick, IMHO. It might be cool on prom night or if you're witnessing a burglery in progress. My family shot some video when they thought they were taking stills with the S230 on vacation in France last December. It was fun watching them clowning around in Parisian cafes. Once. You'd never give them a second look. OTOH, I often travel with a little Canon Elura mini DV cam and edit video onto CD's.
If you're going to shoot cars, look for a digicam with the widest angle lens. That's what they use to get those real sexy close ups. I shoot dog sports, so I need the reach of a telephoto.
Best,
Greg
