I recently moved from a town with Cablevision cable (Optimum Online) to one with Comcast cable. I would definitely recommend Optimum Online. I had it for 3 years and I literally cannot remember a single time I had any problems with them. Comcast has so far been equally as reliable. I don't have any experience with DSL but my old roommate had DSL and then switched to cable and he said cable was significantly faster on average. As far as price, you might be able to get it cheaper if you use Cablevision for your cable TV as well. I remember paying $34.95 or so but that could be a little off.
I agree with mark though, keeping AOL seems silly to me. You will get a username@optonline.net email address when you sign up. However, my current setup is to use Comcast just for internet access, and I maintain a separate domain name/website to use for email, etc. That way, if I ever move and have to change cable companies (like I just did), I don't have to worry about switching my email address.
If you're going to use any type of broadband service, make sure you have some sort of firewall set up to keep out crackers and script kiddies.
