Oh I'm hardly a brewing expert...I just like to have fun with it! It's a great hobby when I need a break from detailing my cars, and gives me something to drink during & after detailing! :)
Yes, you can brew beer with coffee in it!! Redhook used to make a Double Black Stout which was brewed with Starbucks coffee. Actually, it wasn't really their COFFEE, it was their extract that Starbucks created for use in their ice creams & Frappacino's. You can use crushed coffee beans, coffee itself, or extracts. But, you don't need to actually brew with the coffee to get your beer to taste like coffee. The toasted barley malts, chocolate malts, black patent malts, are deep roasted like coffee beans are, and they take on the same roasted taste & aroma that coffee does, so you brew with that & you get coffee taste & aroma without the coffee. Typically, stouts & porters and imperial stouts have a coffee like taste.
And, as for caffeine content, you'd brew with such a small amount of coffee, that in order to get a java jolt buzz going, you'd have to drink so much beer that you'd pass out from all the beer you drank before you'd get that caffeine buzz going! Whew! Did that answer your question?!
I've heard those little beer kits can work pretty well. Are you satisfied with the results and do you like the beer you brew? How much beer do you get? I usually get around 45-48 bottles. I love making labels, too. Naming beer is almost as much fun as naming cars.
