About a year ago, my girlfriend was in the market for a new car. As she really liked riding in my 9-3, she naturally wanted to go to the Saab dealer. Feeling responsible, (and secretly putting a lot of faith in the old "people who test drive Saabs tend to buy them" line), I insisted she at least consider the competition. When it came the IS300's turn, she walked in, exclaimed, (loudly) "eww, it looks like a civic - you mean people buy those things instead of Saabs?! I mean, you could at least get a BMW or something"
We left quickly, and I doubt we were missed by the Lexus armada.
At the time, I didn't really share her opinion - I thought the is300 was a rather derivative and conventional looking sedan with a sweet i-6 and a big question mark where the safety and longevity scores should be, but otherwise objectively worthy of serious consideration.
ANyway.... three months later, after driving 'em all and buying a 2002 9-3, she got hit head on by an midsize SUV doing 30mph. The entire front of the Saab did its job admirably, folding in like a demo film. She had some bruising, and some scary moments when a particuarly large bruise threw a clot. However, even the cop on the scene was shocked when she simply unbuckled her belt, got out, and asked if everyone was alright.
The Saab was fixed to new by insurance, and after seeing the pics of the tire marks, the damage to the car, and (shes in medicine) knowing how the 'head on with an SUV' story normally ends, she can't imagine how anyone could justify spending similar cash on a car that's not much safer than the teenager's econoracer it resembles.
I guess sometimes looks are NOT deceiving.
