My wife has a '93 940Turbo wagon, now with 128K miles on the odometer, and it still runs beautifully. The car just simply has no problems. No rust either.
My wife just drove with her brother and three children from NJ to FL and back in pouring rain the whole time, and it ran perfectly. Seats 7 with the rear folding seat.
Those 940s were really built well... a lot more room than the 240 and they handle and ride much, much better. They don't feel like solid blocks of unmovable metal, but ride firmly and confidently. Their highway ride is excellent, and the seats are fantastic (much better than my Saab's).
The 2.3L iron block engine (4 cylinder) is bulletproof, and with the turbo it has plenty of power. It accelerates very nicely and has plenty of power even when loaded down. Maintenance is very easy, but be sure to get one whose oil has been changed regularly and which was serviced properly. The OHC belt needs to be changed every 50K miles, but I have the special tool to do it and it is pretty easy.
Stay away from the 6 cylinder model... it is considered problematic and rare. The transmissions need fluid change every 60K miles, but will run 300K miles without a hitch.
As you can tell, I am also a big Volvo fan... ;-)
