Not knowing much about the 7 and 9 series, I can shed alittle light on the 240 series. I have a 1987 four door that I use when I store my spg during the horrible cleveland weather. Rear wheel drive to some folks is not something they want, but I found snows to help. I have been told to get something above 87 due to the bodies not being zinc coated, and my 87 is severly rusted in the rockers and around the windshield. Also, 90 and up are supposed to be the best of the 240 series. Since it isn't a turbo, can't tell you much about them. But, I can say that the 240 is a smooth runner without much hassle. Granted, it is a totally different animal than saab. I bought my 240 from a local charity donation car lot and have owned it for almost two years. Other that a muffler, brakes and rear shocks, the car hasn't given me any problems. I hae been looking for a wagon for hauling and camping, but haven't had much luck with finding one cheap. Check for front a rear seal leaks, very common on older volvos, mostly due to the flame arrestor being clogged and building up oil pressure. Ask your friend who is a mechanic, I am sure he will be able to point out alot more quirks in the volvo lineup.
