My partner was in an accident yesterday (thankfully unhurt) when an Explorer failed to stop and a stop sign and pulled out onto the main road without looking. Evan was driving his BRIGHT blue '94 Mustang GT at 35mph. When the Explorer pulled out, Evan hit the brakes and swerved into the center turn lane to avoid hitting the SUV. The Mustang hit the Explorer in the drivers side front wheel knocking it clean off the truck. The Mustang was hit on the passenger side front corner. The entire front of the Mustang disintegrated and both doors were jammed. When I got there and looked at the car I was STUNNED to see that behind what used to be the front facia, the bumper was nothing more than *thin* rolled metal stuffed with styrofoam! STYROFOAM? You've got to be kidding! No wonder the car just disintegrated and is a total loss. The two vehicles didn't look like they were even in the same accident judging from the damage.
At least the SUV driver was the only one ticketed as there was no question who was at fault.
It's going to be a hard sell (Evan says SAAB's only have 1/2 an engine... he's a V8 gearhead) but *I* for one will feel much better if I can get him into a car with a REAL bumper.
