Convertable hardtops add significant cost, weight, and complexity to a car, and as Sir Viggen points out, it's only available on two-seaters. The cost and size of a hard top that could cover 4 seats would be massive.
I don't see Saab as missing the boat - aiming at $50K two-seaters is a niche market.
Instead, Saab is going after 4 seat convertables - a larger market. If Saab is going to spend development $$, they should put it into a market where they can make money.
Not every car company needs to have at least one of every kind of car to compete. Should Saab build a pick-up truck? Why?
I'd rather see Saab spend scarce development money on coming out with a 9-3 wagon. They'd sell a ton more of those than a few rich-man toys.
