High pressure would push up on the heads. But this isn't just true of turbocharged engines; it's true of any engine that has high pressure in the cylinders. You can achieve that with a naturally aspirated engine, as long as the compresson ratio is high enough. Basically, any car that takes a recommended fuel above 89 octane has high pressure in the cylinders. The head simply has to be designed to handle the stresses on it. So I still maintain that this is not a turbo problem; it is a high-performance car problem.
Overboost is another issue entirely. That will give you too much pressure, and that will damage the engine...and not just the head gasket.
I'm still just shocked at that guy's comment. To me, it reads, "Oh, these new-fangled TUHR-bow thingies, ah bets they's nevah gonna work." Hello? Did he miss the last 25 years? Was he in a cave? The whole point of that Times article was that turbo is now a proven technology.
Out of curiosity, what aircraft do you fly? I'm familiar with the workings of turbofan and turboprop engines (ie, gas turbines), but not with turbocharged four-cycles in aircraft. I'd imagine that's becuase my only exposure to planes is through flying on the airlines :)
