I havn't read microserfs but thought that "Life after God," and "Shampoo Planet" were really quite good, although the mid-90's language and cultural references might now seem dated. I've been working through Hemmingway's work over the summer. I thought both, "For Whom the Bell Tolls," and "Islands in the Stream" were both very beautiful. Didn't really like "A Farewell to Arms" - it was the same book as "For Whom..." although not as well done. "The Sun also Rises" was good - I saw Fight Club in July and thought that philosohpically there were a number of similarities.
I spent several pleasant evenings this summer with the Finca Viaga collection of his short stories and a beer - a wood fire going in the chiminea and reading by my headlamp's light made the evenings even better.
"Islands in the Stream" also got me started on Mojitos - the stories about Cuba before the revolution are wonderful.
The first half of "Travels with Charley" (steinbeck) was good, although the material was quite dated - I struggled to finish that book.
