Stephen Donaldson - "The Gap series"
Stephen Donaldson can write and he can write darkly. This is one of the darkest offerings of the entire sf genre. The first book The Real Story is one long rape couched in murder and violence. This establishes itself as a prelude, a character study almost, to serve as a foundation for everything else. There's an explosion of themes and characters that follow in the following novels.
This is mature content at its best and superbly accomplished. You may not want to open up from reading about it, but if you dare enter you're in for a blinding read. There's no weakness or gratuity, just good reading.
As the series continues the sexual aspect is replaced by just sheer violence. Every character in the book has some terrible flaw yet most also have some redeeming value. Over the span of 5 novels almost all have committed both good and evil acts. It is up to us to decide which outweighs the other. And it's a surprisingly difficult decision to make in some cases.
If you can handle well-developed but deplorable characters, brooding atmosphere and continual violence, then here's a long read to indulge in.
