1) I don't think this has anything to do with the fact that she was driving an SUV. I own a Suburban that my wife drives and my wife would never do this to your car so I wouldn't generalize in that way...This lady was simply just not thoughtful which can be found in any driver of any car.
2) I would have laid into her for doing that and not caring for other's property, but thats about all. I had a lady that left a ding and small scratches in my old Viggen and she saw nothing wrong with opening her door into mine and scuffing along between cars to get her butt in her car. I let her have it, but other than getting that off my chest I spent the $50 to have the small ding removed by the dealer and did the light sratches myself. Its not worth suing over or messing with it honestly -- deep scratches would be different. I also now park far away from everyone at work with my most recent Viggen.
The scratches should come off with 3M scratch remover for dark colored cars (assuming your car is dark). They also have one for light colored cars. The 3M products work wonders. Doubt grocery bags will do much damage so try this and then a nice carnuba wax and it should be gone.
Good luck with it.
