I like your perspective. Yes, I keep my cars clean, but I also treat them as machines, not an extension of myself. They WILL get dinged, scratched, and dented... it is inevitable, and I won't be terribly disappointed when they do. They are also just lumps of metal, some nicer lumps than others.
However, I don't think it is proper to place your grocery bags on the hood of someone else's car. That's just rude.
Reminds me of the time when I made deliveries in Manhattan. I was delivering a big X-ray machine and had pulled into one of the very tiny parking lots that the hospitals in Manhattan have. I parked, waiting for the shipping dock to open, and watched as a doctor in a new Porsche parked in the remaining two open spaces at a 45 degree angle so that his precious car wouldn't get scratched.
About 10 minutes later, a beat up old Toyota from a blood supply company with an "Emergency Supplies" sticker on the back pulled into the parking lot. I could hear the driver cursing about the "f'in Porch", and he squeezed his car in next to the "Porch", scrapping it all the way, then climbed out the passenger side door. I watched in amazement, then started walking to the hospital entrance to signal a guard. Before I got back, the supply company driver had left. I gave the plate number to the guard, but don't know if anything came of it. The "Porch" looked very, very bad.
Bottom line is that it probably would have gone another day without a scratch if the doctor had just parked it properly.
