Having several ABS cars, but not a Subaru...
The 'sensor ring' is simply a toothed band incorporated in the outer housing of the CV joint. So it comes with a new axle anyway. Go to AutoZoned & pretend you're looking for an axle for a Honda or something. The big fat part at one end will have a ring with 30 or 40 little square teeth. It's not really a separate part.
So maybe the story is bogus, or more likely...
The sensor is a little round thing mounted in the steering knuckle, with a wire leading off somewhere... It's just called a wheel sensor, not a 'ring'. It's positioned close to the teeth, so as the axle spins the teeth pass by about 1/2mm away.
