OT, I have a Subaru question for my fellow Saab owners!

Sorry, but I can't seem to find a decent Subaru discussion forum. I drive a '00 9-3 but my other car is a '99 Subaru Legacy Outback AWD. I'm hoping someone here is familiar with the drive system and the ABS on the Subaru. So, here's the question...
I recently had a half-shaft failure on the front passenger side wheel. The splines stripped out where the shaft meets the wheel (there's a little rubber boot that tore off and all the grease flew out, dirt got in..). So, the half-shaft replacement is about $200. But, of course, they found another more expensive problem. Apparently, the ABS sensor ring is ALSO shot, and this is going to cost me another $400, mostly in labor. They say it's all part of the half-shaft failure.
Does this sound right or wrong? I'm always suspicious about "additional problems", especially when they cost more than the original problem! Is this something my mechanic should be able to show me? I don't want to see a broken part AFTER it's removed from the vehicle. I want to see the failure IN the vehicle. What does a failed sensor ring look like?
Any suggestions on how I should handle this inquiry with my mechanic? I don't want to piss him off, but at the same time I want to KNOW what I'm buying, right?
Thanks for your advise on a non-Saab problem!
Dan
