Maybe is was vandalized and needed to be repainted. Maybe the finish was damaged when someone used an orbital buffer, and it needed to be repainted. Maybe it was involved in a sand storm and needed to be repainted. Maybe the person was in an accident where they scraped both sides of the car and dented the hood and trunk--and it needed to be repainted.
If a car is damaged on say 60% of its exterior (even less), you can get your insurance company to paint the entire vehicle--very common. Also, if the car is new enough, it will have a very high totaled value. Therefore, it would have to be in a severe accident to be written off.
My guess is your car was involved in an accident where one of the sides was entirely scraped and or dented, and then either the front or back were also damaged--they repaired the damage and painted the entire car.
Good luck with the car.
