A good paint job is $2,000-5,000 on a highline car. You can paint alot of panels (hoods, doors, trunks, roofs) and fix alot of damage without re-painting the entire car. A good bodyshop should be able to match the paint perfectly. You can paint a cheap used car because an Earl Shieb type job is $300-1,000, but a total repaint of a highline car "rather than buff out ordinary scratches and scuff marks in the paint" is B.S.
A total repaint should always be a big red flag. It's not the actual painting that's expensive although a metallic and clear coat ain't cheap, it's the dissassembly of the entire car, removing all the trim and windows, that's expensive. Shortcutting that to bring the painting price down to where your dealer says it makes sense sounds schlockey.
