There is a dealer I know of in Mass, which frequently has used cars coming off lease painted. It is easier (read as cheaper) to have the cars painted rather than buff out ordinary scratches and scuff marks in the paint.
To assess accident possibilities, closely examine all the bolt and fasteners on the body panels, bumpers, etc.. Usually the corners of the bolts will have the paint knocked off them.
It is actually ironic. When you trade a car, the dealer is quick to inspect and point out the trade perhaps has had a body panel painted. Yet, they down play or avoid the topic on the car they are trying to sell.
