It's a 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser HJ60 Diesel. It has a 4.0L I-6 Diesel with a five speed manual (granny 1st and over drive 5th). With these trucks you can easily average 20mpg on the highway. It's not the quietest, smoothest or most comfortable but it's necessary. Come to think of it, it sort of drives like a school bus....;-). (one is pictured below though it isn't mine since I don't have a pic online. It’s what I hope mine will look like eventually).

It all depends on where you live, what you drive and how you drive. Up in Vermont you need Trucks or "SUVs". As good as Saabs, Audis, or Subarus are in slick conditions, they won't perform in 8"+ of snow or mud (as most dirt roads in my area become during Vermont’s fifth season appropriately called mud season.) It becomes strictly a matter of clearance and tire size. I also enjoy the sport of four-wheel off-roading and prefer the enclosed cargo area for my needs. Thus, I drive an "SUV".

What gives us (SUV drivers) a bad name (as those you refer to) are the people who live in downtown L.A. that THINK they know how to drive Cadillac Escalades and such, but really don't. They're the hazards on the road.

Don't hate the SUV. It can be a very practical vehicle. Hate the people who own them and don't know how to drive them. That can also be said for the driver of any car: BMWs?…..only kidding. Alas, there I go stereotyping again....;-)
