Here is a summary of my thoughts...
SUVs are a cross between a truck and a station wagon with the bad attributes of both, but for some reason, our culture thinks that SUVs are cool and wagons are not. People that buy them are being inconsiderate to the environment (by polluting the air, using more resources to produce), other drivers (by not blocking their view, or crashing into them in an unfair collision, or going out of control because of overconfidence from having 4WD).
In the end, it's their right to drive and buy them because it is a free country, and some people do need them (for adverse winter conditions or lots of kids and stuff), but it's a sad commentary on our society that so many people drive them as the only person in the vehicle and without much cargo 99% of the time. If only people had the self-esteem to not worry what other people think and to buy what they need, not what their ego needs. SUVs only perpetuate our image as a wasteful country.
Many of these same arguments apply to other gas guzzling vehicles like overpowered sports cars, and pick-up trucks so we shouldn't let them off the hook either. Probably nobody NEEDS more than 150 hp in a 3,000 lb car, and as somebody else said, nobody NEEDS to travel faster than 100 mph. Look at what people drive in the rest of the world.
