The whole greenhouse gas issue is extremely controversial with experts on each side, so any comments coming from a car maker on this, is to be taken with a truckload of salt. Besides, the problem with SUVs are much more than just the gas consumption. Awful safety for other road users, awful safety for single vehicle SUV accidents, wearing down of public roads etc etc.

Of course, if you absolutely need and SUV for work or driving off road there's nothing wrong with that. It's all the people who buy SUVs for image/prestige who make SUVs a problem.

When you say that you would never buy a wagon, and would buy an SUV instead, you're basically saying that because you want people to think you're cool and have money when you're driving. There is no added utility in an SUV over a good 9-5 sports wagon, unless you're towing extremely heavy objects or need to drive off-road. The wagon is a way better handling, performing, braking and safer vehicle. You can't even put more stuff into most SUVs!

You can talk all you want about greenhouse effect not being important etc etc, but you can't escape the fact that it's all about image.
People only buy SUVs because they want the image and prestige (which is rediculous) associated with the vehicle. Now this wouldn't be anybody else's business or a problem, if SUVs didn't have so many widespread negative impacts compared to normal cars.

But they do, so it is.....
