A non-dynamic X volume of cold air does have more potential energy then the same volume of warmer air, because there are more molecules. You give proof for that yourself; why can you mix more fuel with cold air? Because it is denser, which means that there are more O2 molecules per volume to react with the gasoline molecules.
The turbine is driven by the gasflow not the heat. The gasflow is created by the explosion of the air/gas mixture. The primary function of this explosion is to create kinetic energy to force down the piston, the heat is just a by product. The turbine is driven by the residual kinetic energy from the explosion that was not used to force down the piston.
If we could find a way to let all released energy be kinetic energy it would make the engine very efficient! This would be a cold explosion/combustion and that ofcourse is (at this moment) an Utopian thought...
