No I don't assume that. But it only keeps a small fraction of all defecting owners.
We are developing a new product to keep 28% of owners who normally defect, when we should be developing products that keep the 72% of owners who defect still in their Saabs. What to they want ? Whay are they leaving ? It is a hell of a lot easier to keep existing customers than woo new ones. Look how much the 9-3 SS cost to develop in order to double 9-3 sales. And that didn't double the number of new Saab owners, since the 9-3 SS cannibalized a lot of 9-5 sales. The 9-7 will not be that expensive to evelop, but it will dilute the brand and it will bring in what, perhaps 10k units. Of course SUV's are profitable and I'm all for Saab making a profit so they can stick around.
Smart products, innovative designs, customer service. That would reduce the attrition rate and bring new people into the fold. But I guess that costs money.
