There is some truth to that. The consistent failure of a very visible part affects the perception of quality for the car.
A good friend had a 9-5 wagon which he loved, but at lease end, he bought a BMW instead. His reason was that the 'dang radio display flaked out all the time".
It is pretty frustrating, in my car at least, to know you are in a $30+K car and it can't even tell you the correct time (the time display shows "3:00" at 9 am because one of the dang pixels is out). Little niggling details make people look elsewhere, especially when there are so many other good choices.
I have a clock from a '67 96 that I am seriously considering grafting into the dash somewhere. It always told the time correctly.
