"Purist" serves a purpose.... On the one hand it's nice that Saab has such a regal history that the purists have something to go with. On the other hand purists are often extremists. If you add the words ethnic to purist, you can get a really negative connotation. If you dig into history you often find that the purists have a faulty memory and that their version of pure starts at a particular time and ignores what came before. This is how I feel about Saab hatchback purists. I think these folks have forgotten that Saab only started making hatches in the mid 70's or about half as long as Saabs have been made. A purist describes someone who wants to exclude something they feel is not pure and these exclusions are seldom based in reason or history.
Saab has always leaned on others for it's base technologies, but what's "pure" for me with Saab are the care and craftsmanship of the cars from Trollhattan. I don't mind all the GM technology in the new 9-3SS, what concerned me was the care and craftsmanship would be carried through and it has.
This is my concern with the 9-2 and 9-7, that GM and Subaru can build cars that will live up to the standards created in Trollhattan. Broadening Saabs customer base may offend the purists, but is arguably necessary for Saab's survival. Niche marketing was almost the death of Saab. I hope that the product gurus at GM, Subaru and Saab understand what makes a Saab pure.
