I've seen Bosch tankless heaters at Home Despot. Like Roger said, the big disadvantage is that the flow is limited. There are units that will support 2 major loads by switching on a second burner when the flow rises above a setpoint, but they cost about twice as much as the single burner unit.
I did a quickie payback analasys. At the natural gas rates in GA, it works out to about 2-1/2 years as compared to putting in a new tank-type heater, not including installation (or just parts if you DIY). If we had planned in staying at our location for more than a couple of years, I'd have gotten one to replace our tank-type heater that died.
I really like the idea of a tankless water heater.
