In typical Japanese fashion, while they are not missing the current profitable trend, they are also making a wholehearted effort to have a viable small energy efficient sedan for the future. US companies focus (no pun intended) on the quick profit and make a half assed effort on future small sedan production. Japanese have an unfair advantage in that they do not have to please wall street and have lower pension fund costs, and they exploit that advantage with more R&D.
Remember the gas crisis of the 70's (you pups break out your history books), everyone dumped their gas guzzlers and bought Japanese econoboxes. Honda did not have a muscle car (the then current trend) but they cleaned up and grew because they had the right car when the times changed. And they eventually change, when it does the Japanese will be into the third or fourth generation of their designs and the US will be playing start up.
